In Congress, I will be a strong ally to President Biden to help create good-paying union jobs in the district and ensure that we facilitate a business-friendly environment. As an entrepreneur and the child of a small-business owner, I know firsthand how critical small businesses and job creation are to our regional growth.&nbsp;As a Democrat I will oppose Republican tax cuts for the wealthy that place undue tax burden on the poor and middle class. Every American deserves to enjoy economic security, to buy a house and participate in the American dream that has been promised to us. To allow this we need progressive tax code reform and to undo the damage done by the Trump administration.Our country desperately needs to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. Combined with tax breaks for working families we can help alleviate some of the suffering that has been wrought on large swaths of our society.We are the wealthiest country on earth and it is vital that we do not allow the rich to carve out bigger and bigger slices of the pie. We are at a precipice in human history. Wealth is becoming concentrated in fewer and fewer hands and we must use government regulation to rein in runaway corporate concentration.

Building a Strong Economy

Public safety is about balancing proven methods that work – not defunding or militarizing police.&nbsp;&nbsp;Serving in local government and riding along with our law enforcement, I’ve seen firsthand our local police departments responding to various issues every day. It’s essential we provide the support, training and resources necessary to help them do their jobs and protect our communities. In Congress, I’m committed to supporting funding for community safety programs that invest in local and state law enforcement efforts that best prepare them to serve our communities.Every parent should live without the fear of their child being subjected to excessive force by those we trust to protect all of us. Black Americans are incarcerated in state prisons nearly 5 times the rate of white Americans. Latinx individuals are incarcerated in state prisons at a rate that is 1.3 times the incarceration of white individuals. I’ve worked on diversion programs and I’ve also worked with law enforcement. We must address this disparity in law enforcement by ending racially biased laws and committing to investing in programs that support rehabilitation and reentry into society.We need well-funded community programs such as mentoring, community centers and summer jobs programs that address the root causes and prevent crime.

Public Safety

Throughout PA-12, the lives of our senior citizens have been shaped by decades of unique economic circumstances. As of 2021, an estimated 19.7% of the population of Allegheny County is age 65 and over. Among the 40 largest U.S. counties, only Palm Beach, Florida has a higher concentration than Allegheny County of older residents. Westmoreland County has a population over 65 that is even higher at 24.4%. Our seniors have worked hard their entire lives, and they deserve our respect and the social security benefits they’ve earned.&nbsp;Our region is uniquely positioned to lead on addressing the concerns of our seniors. I will always advocate for our seniors including&nbsp; protecting them from elder abuse and senior citizen scams. I will advocate against big pharmaceutical corporations unfairly banking billions on the backs of senior citizens. I will also vote in support of lowering prescription drug prices and making homes affordable, so our older population can always afford to call PA-12 home and retire with dignity.

Our senior citizens have worked hard all their lives, and they deserve our respect and the social security benefits they’ve earned.

Protecting Seniors

The ability to control our own bodies, gender identity and reproductive health is a fundamental human right. One that I will fight fiercely to protect in Congress.&nbsp;We must protect and restore abortion access. Since Roe v. Wade was overturned in the Supreme Court, our constitutional right to abortion has been destroyed. What many of us never dreamed possible has become a reality.Attempts to limit access to abortion at different points in a pregnancy are uncompassionate, short-sighted and do not reflect the real needs in our communities. I will do everything in my power to stand up and stop efforts to restrict access to abortion and birth control and eliminate funding for family planning programs. I will always fight to require insurance companies to cover birth control and protect funding for critical health care providers such as Planned Parenthood. I will never back down in our fight to protect abortion access.

Reproductive Justice&nbsp;

Strong unions benefit all of us by improving overall quality of life. I’ve seen how union workers push for better safety guidelines in the workplace and lead the fight for effective government oversight to protect working Americans. Unionized workers are often the folks on the ground sounding the alarm and holding big companies accountable when they sacrifice safety for profit. I’m thankful for our unions.&nbsp;If we want to build up worker power and continue to expand our supply of good union, middle class jobs, our outdated labor laws must keep up with the times. For that reason we must pass the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, which is essential to empowering workers, protecting civil rights and social justice. I fully support this bipartisan legislation and oppose the radical Republicans who seek to undermine it.

Working Families

There has been a significant increase in the numbers of attacks on LGBTQ+ Americans from Republicans, and we have also seen a rise in hate crimes. Words matter and any and all hateful rhetoric has real and harmful impacts. Everyone deserves to feel safe and welcome in our community.&nbsp; Our trans neighbors, in particular, should not fear for their lives as they go about their daily lives yet that danger is only spiking, not falling. The number of anti-trans bills being passed nationally is at an all time high and for that reason the trans community needs allies at every level of government.We can begin by passing the Equality Act into law. I will be an ally in Congress to all LGBTQ+ Americans.

LBGTQ+ Rights

Every person deserves to grow up and live in a community without the fear of gun violence and subsequent physical and emotional trauma. With nearly 1600 killed each year in Pennsylvania alone as a result of weak gun safety laws, we must act now to address our nation’s epidemic of gun violence and build a safer country for our children.I applaud President Biden signing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act into law. In Congress, I’ll focus on helping pass common sense gun legislation such as universal background checks for all gun sales, closing loopholes that make it easy for criminals to buy guns and banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.&nbsp;We must recognize the historical disinvestment in communities of color and low-income neighborhoods who are disproportionately affected by our inaction on this issue. We must respond with investments to support after-school programs, mental health support, job training, educational opportunities, homeownership programs and more.In Congress, I’ll do whatever I can to reduce and prevent senseless and tragic acts of gun violence. This includes but is not limited to ending online sales of guns and ammunition, closing gun show loopholes, and enacting universal background checks. The time to act has long passed.Finally, I will support the Democrats efforts to ensure that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have the resources they need to study gun violence.

Healthcare is a right, not a privilege. I’m proud to be a Democrat, the party that gave us Medicare, Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act and the party that continues to fight to give us universal health care. As the child of an immigrant, I understand firsthand the challenges of navigating lack of access to affordable healthcare and the economic fears associated with unexpected illness. Every American deserves to live without fear of health scares transforming the trajectory of their life outcomes.&nbsp;In Congress, I will stand up to greedy pharmaceutical companies, fight for access to high-quality affordable healthcare and work to lower drug prices and the cost of insurance.

Access to Affordable Healthcare

As a proud product of the Gateway School District and the first person to graduate college in my family, I understand the importance of education as the great equalizer. Our public schools are investing in and training the future leaders in our country. We must provide our public schools with the financial resources necessary to improve the quality of education and working conditions for our teachers and school employees.&nbsp;Being able to attend college was very important for me. The opportunity should be afforded to any American who desires to go, while ensuring they are not tied to thousands of dollars in student debt. As I continue to pay my student loans, in Congress, I will be a staunch advocate for making higher education more accessible and affordable.&nbsp;We must ensure we are providing parents and educators the time, support and resources they need to create an environment that fosters creative thinking and growth for our children and students. This includes investing in early learning programs and affordable childcare options for working families to ensure parents can remain in the workforce while achieving positive life outcomes for our children.

Quality Education

As the daughter of an immigrant family, I know that our country is better off when we welcome our neighbors and foster a melting pot community that is inviting to all. This issue has been politicized for far too long. Through my own immediate and extended family, I have seen firsthand our country’s battle with structural and systemic racism interwoven with immigration and policies associated with it. The Trump administration set us back years and we are still repairing the damage done.&nbsp;Almost everyone in this country has had family members who immigrated here at one point or another, and we do not pull the ladder up behind us. Diversity is what makes our country great and we need a 21st century pathway to citizenship that is humane and easily navigable.&nbsp; Waiting 10 years for a court date is not reasonable and it tragically separates families in search of a better life. I will always fight for a compassionate immigration policy that addresses the deeply rooted challenges we are currently facing.

Immigration Reform

We must make it easier for everyone to make better choices when it comes to impacts on the environment. Tax incentives for electric cars that a choice few can afford is only a small part of the equation. In Congress, I’ll use my entrepreneurial spirit to create pathways that invest in renewables and workforce development programs, while ensuring broadened community involvement in the fight against climate change.&nbsp;Access to clean air and drinking water is a basic human right that must be protected, particularly in a world rapidly changing because of climate change. I’ll focus on building back the EPA so it can track the environmental impacts of pollution in our communities and specifically our under-served populations.&nbsp;Climate change is an existential threat to our society and will disproportionately negatively impact our most marginalized communities, at home and abroad. As the daughter of an immigrant, I am eager to advocate for the diverse communities that choose PA-12 as their home. Our region is stronger today because of the power of the American Dream and that empathy has positioned us to lead on world-class climate and energy technology. Our changing climate is inextricably tied to immigration and we must be prepared to lead as global citizens.

Tackling Climate Change

Voters, especially women over 50 and voters outside Pittsburgh, need to know that they have a choice to make between Bhavini Patel and Summer Lee. Bhavini is a principled progressive and lifelong Democrat who will fight for abortion rights and freedom from gun violence. She stands firmly with President Biden in the war against MAGA extremism. Summer Lee wants to “dismantle” the Democratic Party, she undermines President Biden and even wants to “abolish” the police at a time when our rights are in jeopardy, the fate of democracy is on the line, and we have zero margin for error.

Raised by a single mother, Patel’s family founded a local food truck operation and ultimately saved enough money to send her to the University of Pittsburgh. She went on to earn a master’s degree at the University of Oxford and has since launched a technology startup designed to better connect citizens with their government officials.Hers is a resonant story in Pittsburgh, a longtime center of industry with a rich middle-class history, a burgeoning immigrant community and an economy increasingly centered around the tech sector. Patel blasted Lee for keeping that post up on X even after evidence disputed the claim, alleging she had “recklessly chosen to spread disinformation.”Many in the 12th District’s Jewish community — still healing from the horrific Pittsburgh synagogue shooting in 2018 — expressed similar sentiments. Three dozen local Jewish leaders, livid at Lee for pouring salt into a wound,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener" href="https://www.wesa.fm/politics-government/2023-11-01/local-jewish-leaders-call-on-lee-to-exercise-better-leadership-on-israel">called on her</a>&nbsp;last month to “exercise better leadership and join her colleagues in upholding the moral obligation for Israel to protect its citizens against Hamas.”Lee has dismissed those allegations by pointing out that she has consistently denounced acts of antisemitism both locally and nationally. In October, she backed that up by introducing a resolution to commemorate the five-year anniversary of the shooting and draw attention to an increase in the “use of antisemitic language, conspiracy theories, and hatred.” But some on the ground feel Lee’s resolution is too little, too late.While the Israel issue has distinct local salience, crime is expected to emerge as the race’s principal ideological fault line.&nbsp;In a 2020 Facebook livestream held at the height of the George Floyd protests, Lee — then a state representative — pledged to “start to lead conversations of what defunding [the police] looks like.” Those remarks were the centerpiece of attacks on Lee in both her 2022 primary and general elections, and Patel’s campaign has already indicated that they plan to heavily litigate their differing perspectives on criminal justice reform in the coming months.Though there are clear divides between Lee and Patel, the most important dynamics of this race may have less to do with policy.&nbsp;One key distinction between the current and previous matchups: Patel, unlike Irwin, is a woman of color.&nbsp;The 2022 contest between Lee and Irwin took place&nbsp;on May 17, just two weeks after a leaked draft of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling hurled abortion rights to the forefront of the primary. One operative argued that the leak provided a last-minute surge of support for Lee — the sole female candidate in that race — by highlighting the race’s gender divide and swinging enough undecided suburban women toward Lee.&nbsp;This time, Lee can’t count on that contrast.The size of the primary field is also worth watching. Such involvement could damage Lee’s reputation and boost Patel’s name recognition, though their involvement is a double-edged sword; it will also almost certainly energize Pittsburgh’s progressive base.Another unique factor in this primary: the district’s overall partisan lean. Unlike the massively Democratic seats held by Reps.
